The width of the membrane depends on the manufacturer but they usually come in widths of six to six-and-a-half feet and are one-hundred feet in length.
TPO membranes are installed fully-adhered, mechanically-attached or ballasted. Fully-adhered means that the roof is "glued" to the substrate using a special adhesive. What actually happens is the glue creates a chemical bond with the membrane. Ballasted simply means the membrane is loose laid over the top of the roof, sealed at all penetrations and around the perimeter, and then a ballast is put on it to hold it in place. Ballast usually consists of smooth, round, river rock 2" - 3" in diameter and is applied at a rate of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds per roof square (100 sq. ft.). Sometimes concrete pavers are used in their place. These average 20 pounds per square foot. Mechanically-attached membranes are those that use some type of special screw-type fastener to secure it. The type of fastener will depend on the type of substrate but all fasteners are generally screw-type fasteners.
Properly installed TPO roof systems have service lives ranging from about 10 to 20 years, depending on the type of installation. Full removal of the existing roof, the amount of slope the roof has, weather conditions, as well as several other criteria contribute to the longevity of a roof's service life. Typically, if you remove an old roof down to the deck before installing a new one, then the new roof will last longer. Also, the steeper the slope and the less severe the weather conditions, the longer a roof will last. High winds and hail can do a roof in rather quickly.

What exactly is EPDM?

EPDM: Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (or Terpolymer which is simply a product consisting of three distinct monomers). EPDM is classified as a Thermoset material which means it is either fully-cured prior to being installed or that it cures during natural weathering after installation. EPDM roofs are single-ply membranes meaning there is only one ply of roofing material, not multiple plies laminated together.
EPDM has been in use on roofs in the USA since the 1960's and is one of the most common types of low-slope roofing materials. This is because it is relatively inexpensive, simple to install, and fairly clean to work with when compared to conventional built-up roofs. There aren't the odors and fumes that accompany built-up roofs which appeals to many property owners and managers.
EPDM is a rubber material whose principal components consist of the compounds ethylene and propylene. A flexible rubber matrix forms when a small amount of diene is added to the mix. EPDM is available reinforced or unreinforced with both commonly used; it's also available in either a cured (vulcanized) or uncured (non-vulcanized) state. Vulcanized EPDM is the most common with non-vulcanized often used for flashing purposes.
EPDM membrane thickness ranges from thirty mils (0.030" - which I've never seen used for roofing) to one-hundred mils (0.100") with the most common thicknesses being forty-five mils (0.045") and sixty mils (0.060"). There are three standard application procedures: (1) fully-adhered; (2) mechanically-fastened; (3) loose-laid. Fully-adhered EPDM uses water-based or solvent-based adhesives to adhere the rubber to the substrate. Mechanically-fastened EPDM is attached by manufacturer-approved mechanical means to the substrate, and loose-laid membranes are secured only at the perimeters and any penetrations, then a ballast of round river rock or concrete pavers is used to hold the materials in place. River rock is usually installed at a rate of 1000 - 1200 pounds per roof square (100 square feet) and the pavers generally weigh approximately 20 pounds per square foot. Structural integrity is important with loose-laid ballasted roof systems. The seams of all systems are sealed using either an adhesive or a splice tape. Splice tapes have tested with a higher tear-strength.
How Long Do They Last?As with most roofs, EPDM rubber roofs have varying lifespans that depend on numerous criteria. These include environmental conditions such as what type of building (factory or church), how much foot traffic the roof gets, how much water remains on the roof after a rain, and how long it take that water to evaporate. Not to mention geographical location. Roofs in mild climates will outlast roofs in harsher climates. Of course, one of the most important factors in a roof's life expectancy is quality of workmanship. If the roof is not properly installed, then its lifespan will be shortened.
Properly install EPDM rubber roofs should last between 12 and 25 years.

2011Pinnacle Awards recognize leaders in growth, innovation and community support

Duluth, GA- The Pinnacle Small Business Awards Presented by Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) are among the Chamber’s most prestigious awards. The celebration recognized both emerging companies as well as companies that have exhibited a substantial history as an established business.

Commdex Consulting, LLC Owner Prince Niyyar was awarded the 2011 Overall Gwinnett Small Business Person of the Year Award and was also the winner of Gwinnett’s Small Business Person of the Year for the 10 - 99 employee category at the Gwinnett Chamber’s Pinnacle Small Business Awards Luncheon on April 29. This weekend's weather was very wet and stormy, and Monday, too, started off just as wild as the weekend. Driving rain snarled traffic and caused a number of accidents including a major crash this morning involving a tractor-trailer and six cars that blocked Highway 78 in Stone Mountain. Lightning also wreaked havoc sparking a few residential fires. In DeKalb County, damage was done to the Alden Ridge Apartments while fire from a lightning strike destroyed a garage in Lithonia. Gusty winds left their mark as well, toppling trees and powerlines. At one point, over 4,000 people lost power through the Atlanta metro area including hundreds of Sandy Springs residents when a large tree crashed to the ground taking powerlines with it early Sunday. Hail, too, was a big weather story this weekend. In fact on Saturday, hail the size of baseballs and grapefruit clobbered Coweta County smashing car windows in Senoia and Moreland. Home Solutions: Ice Dams : ENERGY STAR: "Ice dams usually occur after a heavy snowfall and several days of freezing temperatures. Warm air inside your home leaks into the attic and will warm the underside of the roof causing snow and ice on the roof to melt. The melted water will drain along the roof, under the snow, until it reaches the cold overhang. The overhang tends to be at the same temperature as the outdoors and the melted water will refreeze and form an ice dam and icicles. The ice dam can cause damage to the roof, which will result in water leaks to the inside. Frequently the result will be a water spot on the ceiling under the roof damage.
Prescription Checklist:
Don’t get on your roof to solve this problem, it could be dangerous.
Avoid standing on the ground and “chipping away” at the ice. Not only could this cause damage to your roof, but you can be seriously injured by falling ice, debris, or tools.
Contacting a roofing contractor to fix your roof leak will not prevent future ice dams.
Seal air leaks (Home Sealing) and sealing duct air leaks in your attic to stop warm air leakage (the source of the problem).
After sealing leaks, add additional insulation in your attic.
Provide adequate attic ventilation so that the underside of the roof and outside air are at the same temperature. Check to make sure attic insulation is not blocking roof ventilation.
Clean leaves and other debris from gutters before the first snow. This will help prevent ice build-up in gutters.
Hire a contractor who is an energy specialist or specializes in air sealing to do an in-home evaluation. A good specialist will use diagnostic equipment to evaluate the performance of your home and generate a customized list of improvements."

What Happens When a Roof Doesn’t Have Proper Ventilation?

When choosing a roofing contractor and a roofing product, it is important that the ventilation requirements and needs of your specific home are addressed properly. Proper ventilation will prevent premature aging of your roof system, increase the longevity of your roof system and increase the energy-efficiency of your home.
Good ventilation creates a cooler attic in the summer and a drier attic in the winter. In a home with poor ventilation, the heat in the attic may eventually reach 140 degrees on a 90-degree day. Also, an overhead attic, combined with moisture, can be damaging to the roof decking and roofing shingles, causing them to distort and deteriorate prematurely. In the winter, the moist warm air from the lower portions of your home rise through the ceiling area into the attic. In the cold attic, the warm moist air condenses on the cold surface of the rafters, the nails and other metals, and the attic side of the roof deck.
This moisture can create several problems:
The condensation can swell the roof deck;
The high level of condensing moisture may also promote a perfect mold-breeding environment;
The water can rot the roof deck and decrease nail-holding capability;
Severe condensation can drip onto the insulation.
One of the most important aspects of the way your roof is designed and built is proper ventilation. You simply cannot over-estimate its importance. What happens when a roof doesn’t have proper ventilation? Improper ventilation allows formation of condensation, moisture accumulation, and damage to the roof deck and, eventually, to the stability of the roof. Improper roof ventilation can also affect the health of your family.
Proper ventilation of the roof and attic of a home achieves several important functions:
It makes the attic space cooler;
It makes the home more energy efficient;
It prevents condensation and accumulation of moisture on the inside of the roof deck, and prevents rotting of the roof deck;
It reduces the risk of fire.
Several types of vents can be used to properly ventilate the roof of your home. Roof ridge vents are placed along the ridge line of the roof. Ridge vents are used for exhaust or outflow of moisture, heat, and stale air. Soffit and Eaves vents are placed at the lower extremes of the roof and provide the intake ventilation.
If you live in an older home, your roof might not be constructed for roof ridge or soffit vents. Older homes were not built with the tight seals of today’s houses. There were cracks and openings around windows and doors, chimneys and other openings. These cracks and openings allowed fresh air to flow into the house. On the principle that hot air rises, the accumulated heat and moisture would rise to the attic and out the roof vents.
Without adequate ventilation, moisture rises with the hot air and forms condensation on the inside of the roof deck. This moisture is released into the air inside the house from bathing, cooking, plants, laundry and other causes. When the condensation forms on the roof deck, it begins to rot the wood. This introduces mold spores into the air, as well as damaging the wood. The result, if the problem is not noticed and repaired, can be destruction of all or part of the roof deck and creation of unhealthy air inside the house.
In our increasingly airtight homes, the importance of proper ventilation in roof construction cannot be over-emphasized. It is important to take the time and do the research to understand the ventilation needs for your home in your region and how best to meet those needs.

As you may or may not know, our company Everdry Roofing Inc. is a corporate sponsor for Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta. This cause is very near and dear to my heart because of the loss of our daughther Caroline Grace to a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Childrens is a wonderful place that relies so much on charitable contributions to operate. They do not turn anyone away and last year had 103 million in unreimbursed cost of care to children and families in need. They had more than 550,000 patient visits in 2009 from all 159 counties in Georgia. This is why we donate what we can to them. However, this email isn't about me and what we give. Is your roof ready for winter?

Numerous home owners wait until something goes wrong with their roof before they perform any type of maintenance on it. However, with the ever changing seasons, Autumn brings around the time of year that you need to prepare your roof for winter. By performing this pre-winter maintenance, you are helping to prevent costly repairs later in the season and on into Winter.
The first step to performing this preventative maintenance is to remove all debris from your roof. One relatively easy way to perform this task is by utilizing a leaf blower. Be sure to clear the gutters of debris as well to avoid ice build up over the winter. If you must use a ladder, be sure to have a sure footing and to follow all of the manufacture's directions for ladder use. It is also a good idea to have someone outside with you while performing these tasks to help with safety standards; holding the ladder, spotting you, etc. Also be sure the area surrounding your house is free of children and neighbors as you don't want falling debris to hit them.
Upon completing debris removal, perform a visual inspection of your home's roof. Keep an eye out for any visual damage or cracks to your roof or around the perimeter. This visual inspection can alleviate the need for expensive repairs as it will allow you to catch small problems early.
Another thing to look at while performing a visual inspection is the flashings, gutters and downspouts, step flashings, roof to wall flashings, etc. All of these areas can let water in after a heavy downpour or snowfall. The first thing most homeowners think when they see a stream of water in their home is that there is a problem with the plumbing. However, numerous times the culprit is the roof.
Now that the inspection has been completed, it is time to fill in the cracks that you may have located. The proper repair can be performed by utilizing mastic. However, if during your repair you find the need to use more than six tubes, you may need to consider replacing the entire roof. Ensure you fill the entire crack with mastic, beginning at the ridge to ensure water can't find its way into your home.
After all of the cracks have been sealed, check the ridges and valleys of your home. Keep in mind that the valleys of a home take on twice as much water as the rest of the roof, so pay special attention to these areas. Fill in any cracks you find in these areas with mastic, ensuring that you don't clog the roofing tabs.
Once you have performed your home's preventative roof maintenance, you can rest assured during the blustery days of winter that you have taken the proper steps to keep your family safe and warm this winter. Now during the next snowfall you can enjoy its quiet elegance instead of dreading what it's doing to your roof.

Meet Hannah
Lisa was pregnant with her second child, Hannah, when tests indicated the baby had a high probability of a significant birth defect. Initially, doctors were concerned about Down syndrome or Trisomy 18, a chromosomal defect with a high mortality rate before or immediately after birth. The many trips Lisa and her husband, Sam, made to the doctor in those final months before Hannah was born revealed a clearer picture. Hannah had a severe heart defect; Lisa and Sam were terrified for their unborn child.

Hannah was born at a remarkably healthy 7 pounds. Immediately, doctors set to work investigating the baby’s heart—the first opportunity they had to perform testing that wasn’t in utero. Although Hannah did not have a chromosomal disorder, she did have pulmonary atresia with a ventricular septal defect—part of her heart was dangerously underdeveloped and also had a hole in it.

One week later, with doctors and staff amazed at her size and apparent strength, already referring to her as the Miracle Baby, Hannah was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to await surgery.

“At first, we had to wait for a bed for Hannah,” recalled Lisa. “But the professional staff at Children’s were amazing. They calmed our fears and addressed all of our concerns.”

The next day, Hannah underwent the complex surgery to repair her heart and soon returned from the wonderfully successful procedure to her much-relieved parents. Stronger than ever, Hannah did not even require a feeding tube, and two weeks later, she was removed from most of her medication. The baby, who even before birth was thought to be perhaps too sick to survive, was now well on her way to a relatively normal life. These days, Hannah—the Miracle Baby—visits Children’s only every three months for a checkup, which gives her doctors and nurses another chance to marvel at one of their most extraordinary patients.

Past experience has shown them that, if they give the customer all the money up front, many people end up spending it on something else. The following picture represents a worldwide problem that is common throughout most of the United States and is very prevalent in the southeastern and northwestern parts of the country. This particular problem was encountered approximately 35 miles outside of Kansas City, Kansas. The discoloration that you see is the result of algae. The build-up of algae will expedite deterioration of the roofing materials and can also raise energy costs. If the roof on a building is white it will help reflect the sun's rays and keep the interior of the building cooler. Roofs whose color is darkened by algae will absorb the sun's rays which can heat the interior and raise energy costs.

There are several ways to alleviate this problem. One is to hose down the roof with diluted bleach or chlorine. Bleach and chlorine are very effective but they also kill all the surrounding vegetation, cause a discomforting odor and upset the environmentalists. Another way is to install some algae-resistant shingles. But sometimes roofs that look bad aren't ready for replacement.
There are two good ways to solve the problem. Take a look at the following picture. Notice below each penetration the roof is white like it’s supposed to be. This is because when rain runs off of zinc, it cleans the algae off of the shingles. Zinc strips installed along both sides of the ridge will eventually clean the algae from the roof.

Another good way is to apply environmentally friendly chemical compounds for immediate results.

Wintertime Hints & Tips: "Check all gutters and make sure they’re clean. You may want to consider a gutter guard or leaf covers. This will help keep ice from building up inside the gutter. The extra weight can tear them down.
Make sure your gutters are securely fastened.
If you have a flat roof with roof drains, make sure the drains are functioning.
Check the mortar and brick on your chimneys and call a mason to make any repairs.
Check all flashings. Flashings are the metal pieces used to waterproof interruptions in the roof plane such as pipes, chimneys, skylights, etc. If you suspect a deficiency and are unsure about how to fix it, call a roofing contractor. Snow leaks can wreak havoc on a house’s interior during the winter - spending a nickel now and save a dime later, as the adage says.
Check all areas of caulking. Touch up any suspected deficiencies.
Don’t use a snow-blower on your roof. Snow blowers are dangerous and can also tear up the roof.
If you get up on the roof to remove snow with a shovel or similar tool, be careful that you don’t damage the roofing materials.
NEVER use an ice pick to remove ice build up.
Yes, heat tape works but be careful and buy a high quality product. Heat tapes have been known to catch fire and burn down houses. Also be careful about how you install it. You don’t want to poke a bunch of holes in your roof."

Damage to the asphalt roof occurs when the protective granular surface of the asphalt shingle loosens and falls off. With the granules removed the shingle loses some of its protection, shortening the lifespan of the roof and making it more susceptible to additional damage.

Hail damages can be hard to find unless you have an experienced roofer or you have leaks in your house, our company can provide you a free inspection along with pictures showing you the damages caused by hail. You may not know that hail damage is almost always covered by your insurance company and in most cases the insurance company will take care of all the repairs.
